He wrote, "I love cuddling with men", opps sorry, wrong quote, that was Matty O's. James quote was "Better to be under- trained by 10 percent than over-trained by 1 percent".
I think I need to print that out and frame it. The minute I read it, my attitude changed. On my worst day from now until Kona, if I do very little, I'll still be 90% ready. It was comforting to be able to put it all in that perspective.
It also gave me an excuse to have a few beers tonight. At 6:10 pm I have to pick Rich and Davis Sohor up from the airport. Rich is coming in to party and Davis, his 22 year old son, is coming in to race Ironman Syracuse 70.3 and THEN party. Youth today........they are so damn responsible.
At noon I went for a massage, it was a no training day. Rarely do I get massages. I figured it couldn't hurt and could only help. The "grinding" of the therapists bony elbow into my "buttock area" was a highlight. I was gripping the table and now have an idea of what "prison love" must feel like.
This weekends race goal is not to show up to Syracuse with flat legs. Right now I'm on the bubble. I think with some rest and active recovery I have a chance of a semi-respectable showing. My biggest motivation is I don't want Matty O to abuse me about a slow time.
If that happens, to build my confidence back, I may have no choice but to follow Matty O's strategy of "doing primarily sprint distance triathlons" and "crushing people" who have never done triathlons before. On second thought, "nah, even I couldn't bring myself down to that level".
To Matty O's credit, at least he hasn't yet hung outside of Weight Watchers trying to "pick a running race with someone". It's a good thing Heather knows when to over-ride him and "draw the crayon line".
I got an email from Mark Allen the other day asking the Kona qualifiers to put together a video of what Kona means to them and their journey. He's going to put it on his website. I recorded a "censored" version and sent it off to him.
Afterwards I thought I should do the "uncut" version, Training Payne style. With some good ideas and direction from Reid I did it on the first take and have included it on the bottom of this post.
Beware!!! It is not suitable for all audiences and I did put a disclaimer at the front. Some of the "hard-core triathletes" may disagree with the content and my lifestyle training approach. Please do not send me emails or comments that "my approach" is irresponsible, unhealthy, causes pre-mature aging, early death or organ transplants. I know all that.
All I ask is those "no nonsense, hard-core, eat-sleep-breath triathlon triathletes" ask themselves one question, "Am I going to Kona this year?" Nuff said.
I'm posting the blog early, I don't know if I'll have time to do it after Rich and Davis arrive. Tomorrow, I'm sure will be another recovery day, from alcohol, if Rich has his way.
Also, I posted a picture I got yesterday from the Barrie Triathlon, it shows Reid on the run in his first, and probably last triathlon. He actually looks pretty, pretty, pretty good.

I love the video. I am buying you a beer for making it to Kona. I must say there is no way I could lead the lifestyle you do and still make it in this sport. But, I am glad someone can. If truth be told everyone would love to train the way you do. I am doing my first Ironman in 58 days in Wilmington NC called Beach 2 Battleship. It has been a hard road and your blog has got me through a lot of days. So now that I have made myself look like a pussy man lover I am gonna go. If you are ever down in greenville, SC look me up and we will have some MAN BEER not that shit you drink! Heres to ya pal!
hahahaha... I can't believe how much you love your beer!!
great story - 550/600 in the sprint!
I'm about there ... I guess I have something to look forward to!
I read that comment today and also got a lift! Thank you TriJames!
B,
You’re an inspiration buddy. Truly. You talk a lot of smack. But under all the smack…there is inspiration.
…or is that perspiration?
Alright for the record I didn't beat the competition in the sprint tri's there buddy I SMOKED IT!
This being my first year in the sport I think I did pretty damn good. You are just jealous that I can make this sport look as good as I do that's all haha.
If by "cuddling men" you mean opening up a can of WHOOP ASS on them and hearing them cry for weeks on end about how sore they are... then yes, I cuddle men! You pansy!!! WAHHHHHH MY BUTT CHEEK HURTS! WAAAAAHHHHHH I CAN'T WORKOUT BECAUSE I GOT A BRAINBUSTER! HAHAHA
You do realize that the "bony elbows" that you felt from the massage therapist was actually his donger. He was leaning over you to try and reach your shoulders and was poking you in the rear. So you were 100% right about "feeling prison love". I have followed a lot of your training lifestyle but I have to draw the line at taking it in the pooper days before race day!
All kidding aside great video. As always keeping it true to yourself. Next year is the year I will be joining the "big boy races". You have until then to make fun of me!
Mahalo!
"I have a wonderful recovery drink....it can be taken by itself as a supplement, without even dinner".
This is classic - epic, actually.
I'd say you are way more than 90% ready for Kona already. You just don't know it.
Enjoy a couple days recovery!
Love the video, especially the part where you stop talking to light up the stogy. You have an amazing story, always inspiring and entertaining. I didn't know you had done Kona before on the lottery, that is cool.
Glad you are keeping the massages legal for now... :)
Yeah baby yeah! Nothing more to say - you said it all. Well done buddy - Aloha!
PS Great picture of Reid - he really does look the part.
Matty-O...A cunning retort. I would expect nuthin' less from you.
hahaha. lots of laughs today from the post, the video and the comments. I'm wondering though, what is going to come after Kona? I love the blog for the triathlon/life philosophy balance, but are you going to keep up with triathlons after Kona? After all you reached your goal of qualifying for Kona? What will be next??? Side note, I signed up for MAO yesterday hope it eventually pays off for me as it did for you? I'm going to buy you a stogy today. Later, Bob.
So far during the review of this blog entry I have spit coffee out my nose and choked on a bagel, thanks for that!
LOVE the video. Can I link it on my blog? I'd love to post to my family and friends my triathlon inspiration. Seriously, can I?
Disappointing. I at least expected the beer bong to come out. :)
Great vid nonetheless.
As far as the 'what is next' after Kona - I'm demand nothing less than a double Iron!
Excellent post B! Man, your blog is addictive. I can't imagine my mornings without reading it.
I was missing all that smack talk about John Barclay. Now that you picked on Matty O. (sorry Matty) it is even more entertaining, especially that he's replying back.
I love the video and especially the quote about the beer. That is epic, indeed.
oh and just a thought, for continuity, maybe you should have shot this from your bathroom....
Great video, just one snag, this is you Bryan Payne speaking???? Quote: I don't care about my time!!!! I just know that somewhere you have a secret dream of the ideal time (don't we all).
Keep going and 90% is fabulous! :)
D, thanks for the Beer Dave. My lifestyle just shows what's possible when you set your mind to it, haha. Good luck on your race, I hear that is a good one and would like to do it one day. I'm glad my blog can help and thanks for "the pussy man love". haha. I'd love to get together if I'm in SC and hahaha on the "shit beer comment".
C, haha. Next to my wife and kids, it's number 2.
A, thanks, just shows what's possible and "you can do it".
D, cool.
Q, thanks, "smack is my middle name", first I talk it, then I "smack others on the course". haha. I'd go with perspiration. haha.
M, I know you smoked it on the Sprint, but I'm most glad they have an age limit at "the kids of steel races", if not, I KNOW you'd want to go for it. hahahaha. Yes for you're first year, for a young 26 year old you did good, still can't beat a 45 year old, but you have 20 years to try. haha. Yes, I am a baby, "I am a man", you should hear me when I get a cold. haha. The massage therapist was a woman. I know it's easy for you to think it was a man with "your massage therapist gender of choice". haha. If anyone knows when you should "taper" from taking it in the "pooper" its you. hahaha. Thanks on the props.
C, Glad you liked that line, one of my favorites and "true". Thanks for the props.
M, thanks, did you notice the expertise on getting the stoggie fully lit? haha.
S, thanks.
S, yeah, I thought it was a great photo, I hope it will motivate him in the future.
Part 2,
Q, don't encourage him, he doesn't need more. haha.
B, after Kona, more Ironmans, but maybe some ultra's. I'm really thinking about that. I also have NYC marathon and hopefully will qualify for Boston. Long distance triathlons are a life long journey and committment. You'll find out why after my kona report. Good luck with MAO, you will definitely get better, you'll amaze yourself.
A, haha, good, mission accomplished. Yes, you can definitely link it to you're blog. You have courage. haha. They'll think that's what you want to do, smoke, drink, party, train and race.
J, thanks. Yup, double and triples may be on the horizon.
D, thanks bro. Matty is fun to "shot the puck to the head", he pushes back and I can "take more shots". haha.
A, haha, you're right, that would have been funny.
J, thanks. hahaha, looks like you know me better than I thought. That what Alice and the kids say. haha
