The day started with Alice and I watching Alyssa and Nazaire run in Burlington's Chilli 5 KM. It's called the "Clilli", I wasn't referring to the weather. Although, it was a little Chilli.
They've started their training on December 28th and have been training regularly. Alyssa found a training program they have been following. It started with run 1 minute, walk 1 minute. They started right from ground zero. By the end of it, they could do a full 5 km run.
The night before, I asked her what her strategy was. She didn't really have one. I told here that this is a "race", you don't go out to finish, you go out to finish as hard as you can and try to set a PB. I told her to go out hard, but not to hard and then for the last half of the race, giver.
Before the race, there was a little drama. Alyssa had to go to the washroom and the line up was so long we were worried she wasn't going to get to the start line in time. She ended up being fashionably on time.
Alyssa did a race report you can check out at http://trainingsidebyside.blogspot.com/2010/03/race-day-mission-accomplished-2813.html They ended up finishing in 28:12. Alyssa came 4th in her age group 176 and Nazaire 11th in his age group. Overall they came in 174/586. I thought that was an unbelievable result, 176th place. Especially considering she couldn't run 5 minutes straight when they started.
After the race, the four of us went out for breakfast and then the real fun began. I had to fit in a 4000 meter swim and 2.5 hour outside bike ride. I ended finishing up just at dusk. I still hadn't packed, but it wouldn't be right if I didn't take Alice out for dinner before China. We ended up having Vietnamese Thai. I don't know why I wanted it, after all, I'll be eating that type of food for the next two weeks.
By 12 pm, I was all packed and ready to go. I actually felt pretty calm. I was shocked to see Ironman China Twitter to the world the following:
Interesting age-groupers to look out for at#ironmanchina M45-49 Bryan Payne, of Canada. He'll be running in his trademark Captain's Cap!
Speed Swim - 1:29:48 / 4000 meters
Tempo Bike - 2:30:52 / 77.08 km / 30.65 kph / 136 avg hr
