After flying a total of 4000 km to and from Winnipeg, I arrived home at 1 pm today tired and really didn't feel like training. All I wanted to do was sleep.
I gave it a lot of thought and was calculating if I missed training today, "how would I catch up tomorrow? We're flying to Kona and wouldn't get in until around 11 pm Toronto time (5 pm Kona Time) and not sure how I'd feel physically. I was also concerned about missing a third day of training in a row.
In the end, I "pushed" myself out the door and did about 3 hours of training. I swam, biked and ran. Unfortunately my buttocks / hamstring only felt marginally better.
Without question I needed to run. I think it was wise that I took the "legs out for a light jog". There's so many other parts, like the quads, calf's and tendons, that need a regular workout to stay strong and sharp.
It's pretty much an easy schedule of training from now until next Saturday's race. My hope is a couple more days of rest and no long runs will help my discomfort injury get better. I'm glad it's going to be lighter training, I'm close to burn out, again.
I was reading the "Triathlon Bible" and it says that you have to go very close to the line of "over training" in order to shoot up to "peak performance". I'm definitely on that bubble. August and September where lots of training mileage months. Not to mention December 2009 through to July 2010.
Actually, now that I think of it, it's been 11 months of high mileage training and even then, I only had a three week semi-break from the previous season of racing. In fact, it's probably close to 20 months of fairly intense training without much of a break.
It's time for a well deserved break.
When I got finished today's training it was 8 pm and I still needed to pack, which took me two hours of high intensity focus. I wanted to make sure I didn't forget anything. This being my 3rd flying destination Ironman, the packing of the bike felt like "old hat".
By the time I was done, I was beat and hungry and pulled a John Barclay and picked up a "Quarter Pounder and Cheese" from McDonald's.
Right now I can feel I'm in the home stretch. Next post will be from Kona, providing Air Canada does their job and gets me and my gear there, which is always a crap shoot.
Time for Bed.
The photo today is of a sweat band that Davis gave me yesterday. I'm definitely going to use it when appropriate and I'm sure it will get well used.

That headband is you to the tenth degree. I wish I was leaving for Kona tomorrow, I have two more days to wait.
Love the headband. Don't forget The Captoon, needs to wear his catain's hat 100% of the time - I got people looking out for you.
ENJOY
Dude, headband... that is badass. In that second video though, how are kids coming out that giant penis??? Is that a toy in your backyard? Better yet, is THAT the reason your ass hurts so much?!
So pumped for you man. It is here! KEEP YOUR HEAD CLEAR! stay calm and don't get tense about ANYTHING, even if Reid is throwing up his small intestine hahaha.
All your crazy ass hard work and intense training is behind you. You are on easy street. Enjoy the moment which is something I know you will do!
Gads I hate the flight to Hawaii. On the upside I found the jet lag wasn't too bad at all going over there.
I can't wait for your posts this week. I want video!!!
Yeah...we’re doing this vicariously through you.
Good luck with Air Canada…Hahaha…they suck so bad.
Phew, the bike is packed, so only Air Canada to worry about on that front.
Enjoy the days leading to IM, and let the captain 'live large' in Hawaii :)
Great headband BTW.
LOVE the headband!!
Can't wait for the report from Kona.
Way to SIU and get out for that run. I guess I better get my ass out the door.
Bryan, good luck this weekend. Keep your head clear, stay focused, have fun, and I expect a lot of photographic proof of extreme debauchery & celebration post race. :)
nicely done dude, i like the idea of getting close to overtraining to get yourself to that next level, i feel like i am there as well with my raining being about 2 hours a day at the moment. i did 1.3 miles in the pool today in 41 minutes and then 18 miles on the bike in 59 minutes. it was a bit slow but there was lots of hill work in that. let me know if you are looking for a training partner in Kona, my Danish training partner is there to watch the race and he has his $12000 bike with him. he is getting in some training so he can try and beat me in austin.
Looking forward to the Kona reports. It's been great following your journey to Kona thus far. Very cool so many strangers can follow. When you did this when you were in by lottery you would have mailed us all letters haha.
S, haha, thanks, I love it too. Good luck to you as well.
S, I agree, 100% captain, 100% of the time.
