It was a barn burner...

It's amazing the power of a good night sleep. Twelve hours earlier I couldn't run for more than 13 minutes, then 12 hours later, I do a 2:30 run in 43 C and enjoyed every moment of it.

At 10 kms my socks were soaking wet. My entire body was sweating profusely and it all ended up in my shoes. There was a lot of squish, squish, squish, you don't expect that on a sunny day. I had the same thing happen to me during last Sunday's Half Ironman.

My run time didn't reflect how I felt. I ran well, except it was so hot, my heart rate would shoot up and I was forced to walk a lot. Especially the last half, which was during high noon on a hilly course. When I got back home I must have drank 10 pints of water. I drank so much water it started to make me feel sick. I actually had to lie down for a few minutes to let my stomach settle.

When I walked in the house, my socks were so wet I didn't even bother taking my shoes off. Had I, the floors would have looked like I wet mopped them. It took at least 30 minutes in an well air conditioned house until I stopped sweating. There was sweat all over the kitchen floor, Alice wasn't impressed when she walked in the house.

After dinner, I did a moderate bike ride. It was 43 C when I started and 41 C when I finished in the dark. It's cool riding in the dark, I love seeing the lightning bugs coming at me as I ride. When I got home I couldn't drink water, just the thought of it was making me sick. I needed something different and ended up making a big pitcher of Limeade. It tasted sooooo good with crushed ice.

It was a great day of training. I LOVE training in the heat. No matter how hot it is, it sure beats riding or running in -20 C.

Long Run - 2:30:14 / 26.87 km / 5:35 pace
Mod Bike - 2:40:17 / 80.42 km / 30.1 kph avg

Love listening to all you people in North America whinning about the heat. That's situation normal here in Malaysia. Dehydration, soaking wet socks etc... Welcome to 24/7 365 training in the tropics Now Suck It Up and stop ya whinning.

On a serious note, you have to be super careful about Hypernatremia - basically diluting your blood by taking too much water. You must takes some sort of salts too either through food, sports drinks or if necessary salt tablets. It's very serious and people regularly die from it - the symptoms are similar to dehydration often leading people to drink more water.

On a final point, I'm one of the few people that when you see the reality TV shows with the police chasing the bad guys I'm almost always hoping the bad guys are gonna get away. They seldom do on the TV at least but the video clip was one of the coolest things I've ever seen. I brought my office to a standstill with a cheer when not only did the guy escape but the cops crashed their car - AWESOME. Go bike bandit Go!

Redemption day my friend!

SOLID workouts.

That is a hell of a run and I agree 100% with you on the heat. I have had my best workouts in 90 degree plus heat (Fahrenheit). I am looking forward to my run workouts this week, we got the same heat wave as you and it feels soooooo invigorating to be out there getting the workout done.

Great bounce back workout.

Bryan,
I wanted to thank you for the blogs. Ive been following anonymously for about a year now and finally decided to join so that I could say thank you. I'm a fat guy that finally did my first sprint triathlon in Febuary. I love reading your blogs and seeing the training you put in. A lot of days it's the inspiration that I need to get my ass off the couch.
Thanks,
Jason

I envy you. I can not run in the heat. I just can't. I ran 2:20 on Sunday on the treadmill. I know, I know... I was just not built for it.
On Sat I did 6 hours bike ride, which was fine, but the following 30 min run was ridiculous. My HR was 140 walking!
Anyhow, well done!

S, true, but at least I can go 2 days without a shower and not have bacteria eat away at my flesh. haha. Thanks for the advice on the water, I think that's what happened to me. I too loved that video, I was lucky to get away. hahaha.

M, thanks bro. Have fun in heat, poor Heather. I mean running in the heat. haha.

J, thanks for leaving a comment. Congrats on your first sprint. You motivate me hearing that I'm motivating you. We've all been FG and keep going and you will soon be a PFG. Remember, an object in motion stays in motion and you're no different than any of us PFG's other than you got a heavier suit on. haha.

H, yes you should envy me on every level. haha. Your from brazil and can't handle the heat, no wonder you moved to Canada. I'm more impressed that you can run 2:20 on a dreadmill. Keep up the good work.
