Today I had a scheduled speed run session at the track. I decided that because my calf was sore that I was going to run, but not at the track, and in my ultimate wisdom I was going to do a tempo run around my house instead of track work. Mistake.
Five minutes into the run, I felt a big tug at the side of my calf. Rather than running slow, like I did on Sunday, I had to go hard and now I re-injured my calf. It felt almost the same as last week, when I originally hurt it. At that point, I had a decision, do I turnaround and go back home, call Alice to pick me up, or try to continue to run on it. I decided to run on it. I ended up changing my running style and ended up running 7 miles in 1 hour.
When I got home my calf was sore, I actually started to walk with a limp. The first thing I did was stretch and then I iced my calf. Then I decided to stay relaxed and just forget that my calf is sore and see if being relaxed would help it get better. By the end of the night, as we were partying with my sister and brother in law at 3 am, it felt semi normal. At least there was no limp. I averted disaster once again.
I figure I'm still going to keep running on it because I need the endurance training and it also helps build my racing confidence. But I'm not going to do any more speed work. I hope this turns out to be a good decision.
