Last night was a long training session and today I had to get up a couple hours early for work, leaving me only 6 hours of sleep, which is not enough. I typically need 8 hours for healthy recovery. I had an important meeting that took all morning, requiring my full attention, and by 1:30 pm I was "toast".
I wasn't functional, so I decided to go home and sleep, which I needed badly. I woke up around 4:30 pm and felt a lot better. I ended up going for a 12 mile run which took me 1 hour and 45 minutes and I averaged 8:46 per mile. For the entire run my heart rate was around 125 and I felt strong, although my knee was still bothering me.
When I got home, I ate and then at 7:30 pm headed to the pool for a 3500 meter speed swim. As I pulled into the driveway at the YMCA I really started to feel burnt out and I didn't know if I was going to go in and swim or turn my truck around and go home. I ended up going into the pool and swimming 1200 meters. At that point, I felt so mentally tired that I decided to go home and finish the rest of the swim tomorrow. In hindsight I shouldn't have done the run today and let my knee rest, as I have a 10 km race on Thursday.
The next 5 weeks of training is high mileage and is going to be tough, I figure I really need to monitor my body and mind and make sure I don't burn myself out.
